In Gua Sha too much oil between the tool and the skin leads to too much residue. Heavy creams are not suitable because they restrict the action of the tool, not allowing to flow easily and lightly upon the surface of the face. Gua Sha has been traced back to the Paleolithic age where rocks or stones were scraped along parts of the body to help alleviate symptoms of pain or illness, and is considered a precursor to Acupuncture. Gua Sha tools evolved into instruments made from bone, plastic and Bian Stone and Jade.

Gua sha is still performed in many eastern cultures with a coin in homes of families who believe strongly in releasing pathogens through the muscles and skin, and often don’t have access to a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.

I am a big lover of gua sha. I personally love to use it on my body each morning after getting out of the shower with a lather of body oil on my legs and butt cheeks. I use the gua sha tool quite vigorously on this area. For the face, I love to gua sha when I'm in the sauna. Especially on my jaw line which gets quite tense (but a more gentle gua sha action on my face than I do on my body). It's a beautiful way to relieve stress that we hold on our face.
